Plex vs IQMS: Choosing the Right ERP for Mid-Size Manufacturers

Both Plex and IQMS are purpose-built ERP platforms for discrete and process manufacturers. Both have strong track records in mid-market manufacturing. The choice between them depends on your specific operational profile, your integration requirements, and where you expect your business to be in five years.

Plex: the case for it

Plex is cloud-native. There is no on-premises option, no server to manage, no patching cycle. For manufacturers who do not want to manage IT infrastructure, this is a genuine differentiator.

Plex's production tracking and shop-floor control functionality is strong. Lot traceability, container tracking, and production scheduling work well for manufacturers with complex traceability requirements.

The Plex network - supplier portals, customer portals, and trading partner connectivity - adds value for manufacturers with complex supply chains.

IQMS: the case for it

IQMS (now Delmia Apriso as part of the Dassault Systemes family) has historically been stronger for injection molding and plastics manufacturers, with machine monitoring capabilities built into the platform.

The on-premises option is still available, which matters for manufacturers with data residency requirements or environments where reliable internet connectivity is a concern.

IQMS's financial modules are generally considered more mature than Plex's, which can matter for businesses with complex cost accounting needs.

Where both struggle

Neither platform provides a complete reporting solution out of the box. Both require a BI tool for the kind of flexible, ad-hoc analytical reporting that modern manufacturing leadership teams expect. Plan for this in your total cost of ownership.
