Every ERP implementation has a go-live checklist. Most of them are missing the items that cause the problems that show up on day three, not day one.
Here is what consistently falls through the cracks.
Cutover data validation
Most teams validate data in the test environment and assume the cutover will be the same. It will not be. Production data has edge cases that test data does not. Run your validation scripts against the actual cutover data before you declare go-live complete.
User access verification
Every user needs to be able to log in and access their required transactions before go-live. Not tested in theory - actually tested by the users themselves. Access issues discovered on day one of go-live create bottlenecks that compound quickly.
Interface testing with real volumes
Interfaces between your ERP and external systems often work correctly in low-volume testing and fail under production volumes. Run a volume test on every interface before go-live.
Printer and barcode configuration
In manufacturing environments, label printers, barcode readers, and shop-floor terminals need to be configured and tested in the actual production environment. This is consistently the last thing configured and the most likely to cause day-one disruption.
Backup and recovery verification
Before go-live, test your backup. Restore it to a test environment and verify it works. Know exactly how long a recovery takes and what data would be lost in a worst-case scenario.
Support escalation path
Every user should know who to call when something does not work as expected on day one. The answer should not be "email the implementation team." Define a specific escalation path with committed response times.
Communication to affected parties
Customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders who will interact with your new system need to know what is changing and when. Missing this creates confusion and support volume that the go-live team cannot absorb.
