Microsoft sells both Business Central and Dynamics 365, and the naming creates genuine confusion. They are not the same product. They are not interchangeable. The right choice for your business depends on your size, your complexity, and your industry.
What Business Central is
Business Central (formerly Dynamics NAV) is Microsoft's ERP for small to mid-market businesses. It covers financials, supply chain, sales, service management, and light manufacturing in an integrated package designed for businesses roughly in the 20 to 500 employee range.
It runs in the cloud (Microsoft's hosted version) or on-premises. It is built on a single code base with a single data model. Customization is done through AL extensions that are designed to upgrade cleanly with new versions.
What Dynamics 365 is
Dynamics 365 is a family of modular applications, not a single product. The relevant ones are Dynamics 365 Finance, Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, and Dynamics 365 Sales (the CRM component).
The Finance and Supply Chain modules are enterprise-grade and designed for businesses that have outgrown mid-market ERPs: multi-entity structures, complex international operations, sophisticated manufacturing, and regulatory requirements that require enterprise capabilities.
How to choose
If you are under 500 employees with relatively standard operations, Business Central is almost always the right starting point. It is faster to implement, significantly less expensive, and sufficient for most requirements in that range.
If you are above 500 employees with multi-entity structures, complex manufacturing, or operations in multiple countries with distinct regulatory requirements, Dynamics 365 Finance and SCM handles what Business Central cannot.
